Watch Your Diet

Your parents were right: all that chocolate, candy and soda can really take a toll on your teeth. It’s not the sugar itself that does damage, but rather the bacteria in your mouth that feed on sugar and produce acid. The more sugary foods you consume, the harder it will be to maintain the whiteness of your teeth. The good news is, not all foods are the enemy of white teeth. Fibrous fruits and vegetables that give your mouth a good workout can help preserve that stainless shine. Dairy products, like cheese, yogurt, and milk, can also strengthen and whiten teeth. If you do indulge in sugary treats, you can limit the potential damage by brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth with water.

Avoid Drinks With Tannins

Tannins are the plant-based substance that gives red wine its coveted taste and texture. They also provide the rich, dark colour of coffee and tea. And unfortunately, tannins can cause noticeable stains on the surface of your teeth over time. You can reduce the staining effects of these beverages by brushing or rinsing your mouth with water after consumption. If you really want to keep your teeth looking as white as possible, it would be best to avoid tannin-heavy beverages like tea, coffee and red wine as much as possible.

Drink More Water

There are lots of things not to drink if you want to maintain white teeth after a professional teeth whitening procedure. But what should you drink? The answer is water. Along with keeping you hydrated, drinking water helps to wash away leftover food and residue that feeds cavity-causing bacteria. Plus, drinking water with fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay. Next time you’re out for dinner, skip ordering a round of drinks and enjoy a cold glass of water.

Quit Smoking or Chewing Tobacco

There are a multitude of health reasons to quit smoking, and you can add the appearance of your teeth onto the list. Whether you smoke or chew it, tobacco use will result in stained teeth and a higher risk of gum disease, tooth decay. If you don’t quit, all the time and money you spend whitening your teeth will essentially go up in sm oke.

Maintain Good Dental Habits

If you weren’t doing it before, now is the time to start brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day. Good dental habits are one of the biggest factors in maintaining healthy, white teeth. If your routine allows for it, you can also brush immediately after your meals to ensure no stain-causing food bits get left behind on your teeth. Don’t forget to have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months! Your dentist can give you personalized advice and let you know when it’s time for a teeth whitening touch-up. Image: zdenkam
