General Dentistry
While most of our patients plan their regular checkups, none of them plan to need our other dental services, but that doesn't mean they don't occasionally need to spend a little extra time in our chairs. Everyone experiences general dental problems from time to time, and we are happy to help.
Assessment Appointment
When dental pain or discomfort strike, it can be hard to tell exactly what is causing it. Sometimes the pain comes and goes. Sometimes it comes on suddenly, and sometimes it only happens when you are doing something specific, like eating hot or cold foods.
It is not possible to diagnose your dental pain over the phone, so the first thing we do when you call our office is schedule an appointment to assess your needs and determine what the exact problem is.
Our dentists will ask you about the problem you are experiencing, and then examine your teeth and gums to find any easily visible problems. Finally, we will use x-rays to take a closer look at what is going on between your teeth and under your gums. All of these things help us to establish exactly what needs to be done to treat your problem.

Treating General Dental Problems
The next step in most of our general dentistry services is to treat whatever we discover during your assessment. The treatment plan will depend on the nature and severity of the problem.
If you have a simple problem that can be solved right away, and there is enough time left in your appointment to do so, we will proceed with treatment immediately. If it's a little more complicated and needs a little more time, we'll take temporary steps to make you as comfortable as possible and relieve pain and inflammation, prepare anything necessary for your treatment, and schedule another visit as soon as your schedule allows.
General dentistry is like anything else related to your teeth. The sooner you get professional treatment, the less pain you will experience, and the simpler your treatment options will be.
The team at Trillium Dental Centre are happy to treat all of your dental needs, but if you have pain or discomfort, difficulty chewing or can feel that something is broken, chipped or cracked, it's better to contact us sooner rather than later.
How a General Family Dentistry Visit Works
General family dentistry covers the routine, preventive, and most common restorative care that keeps teeth and gums healthy across every life stage. A typical patient at Trillium sees us twice a year for cleanings and exams, plus additional visits for any specific treatment that comes up. The same office cares for young children, teens, adults, and seniors, with care plans built around the needs and circumstances of each.
A first visit starts with a comprehensive exam. We ask about your medical history, current medications, any dental concerns, and what you would like to address. The dentist examines your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and bite. New x-rays are taken if recent images are not available. After the exam, we discuss what we found, what your goals are, and what a sensible care plan looks like. For most patients the result is a clean bill of health plus a six-month recall schedule.
When treatment is needed, we explain what each procedure involves, how long it takes, what it costs, and what alternatives exist. Nothing is scheduled without your full understanding. For families, we schedule appointments together where possible to reduce trips and make dental care fit into a busy week.
What Family Dentistry Covers
Family dentistry is broad on purpose. The services most commonly needed across a lifetime include:
- Routine cleanings and exams every six months, with x-rays as needed
- Fluoride treatments and dental sealants for children, teens, and adults at higher cavity risk
- Fillings (composite tooth-coloured fillings for most cases) for cavities or worn restorations
- Crowns, bridges, and onlays for teeth that need more than a filling
- Root canal therapy for infected or damaged tooth nerves
- Extractions when a tooth cannot be saved or is causing problems
- Dental implants and implant restorations for replacing missing teeth
- Dentures (complete or partial) for patients missing multiple teeth
- Cosmetic dentistry including teeth whitening, bonding, and veneers
- Periodontal (gum) care and treatment of gum disease
- Emergency care for broken teeth, lost fillings, abscesses, and dental trauma
- Custom mouthguards for sports and night-guards for grinding
- Children's dentistry from the first tooth onward
- Care coordination with orthodontists, oral surgeons, and other specialists when needed
We are a single dental home where most of your family's care happens, with specialist referrals coordinated when a particular treatment falls outside what we provide directly.
Building a Long-Term Dental Care Plan
Good dental care over a lifetime is more about consistency than about any single procedure. The foundation is twice-yearly cleanings and exams, supported by daily brushing and flossing at home. From that base, treatment happens as needed — a filling when a cavity appears, a crown when a tooth has fractured, periodic preventive work like sealants for children, custom guards for grinders. The cumulative result of consistent care is most patients keep most or all of their natural teeth into their senior years.
Families benefit especially from establishing care patterns early. Children who see the dentist starting around age one form positive associations with dental visits, are less likely to develop dental anxiety, and reach adulthood with better dental health than children whose first dental visit is during a problem. Teens benefit from the focused attention that wisdom teeth, orthodontics, and sports protection require. Adults move toward maintenance and addressing any earlier issues. Seniors often need attention to gum health, dry mouth from medications, and the upkeep of older dental work.
We design care plans around the patient, not around procedures. If something fits your situation we recommend it; if it does not, we say so. The goal is not to do every available treatment but to do the right treatments at the right times.
Cost and Insurance Coverage
General family dentistry costs vary widely with what is needed. Routine cleanings and exams are the most common visits and have the lowest fees; major restorative work like crowns, bridges, and implants is at the higher end. Trillium follows the current Ontario Dental Association Suggested Fee Guide for all services, and we provide written estimates before any treatment begins.
Most private dental insurance plans cover preventive care at 80 to 100 percent and basic restorative work (fillings) at 70 to 80 percent, with major work (crowns, bridges, dentures) often covered at 50 percent. CDCP covers a broad range of services within its annual benefits framework. We submit insurance claims directly where the plan allows it, run pre-determinations for larger treatment plans, and discuss payment timing for any out-of-pocket portion. Direct billing is available with most plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I come in?
Most adults benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months. Patients with active gum disease, frequent cavities, or other risk factors may need to come every three to four months. Patients with very stable oral health may sometimes extend to every nine to twelve months. The right interval is set together with you based on your individual situation.
Can the whole family see the same dentist?
Yes. We see patients of all ages, from young children to seniors. Family appointments can be scheduled together where possible to reduce trips.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?
You are welcome regardless of how long it has been. Your first visit back includes a comprehensive exam, full-mouth x-rays if you do not have recent ones, and a discussion of what your teeth and gums need. We focus on getting you onto a regular schedule rather than judging time gaps.
Do you accept new patients?
Yes, we accept new patients of all ages and from all backgrounds, including CDCP patients, patients with private insurance, and patients paying out of pocket. Call (519) 746-4000 or request an appointment online to book a first visit.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
We are open Monday through Thursday until 8 PM, Friday until 5 PM, and Saturday until 3 PM. Sunday is closed. This gives flexibility for school-age children, working adults, and busy schedules.
How do I know what my insurance covers?
We run a pre-determination with your insurer before any larger treatment plan. For routine cleanings and exams, your plan will cover whatever it has set for preventive care; we tell you in advance if any portion will be out of pocket.
